FOURTH AND FIFTH GRADERS VISIT THE OPERA

Our fourth and fifth grade students had the chance of a lifetime to see Boston Lyric Operas's production of "The Magic Flute" by Mozart on March 17, 2009.  What made this spectacular performance so special was that a professional opera singer from the cast had visited the school on March 5.  Tenor Neal Ferreira explained the many types of jobs involved in an opera, such as composer, conductor, singer, stage manager, and artistic designers.  He acted out a one-man show of the opera in which he, with the help of some clever props, acted out every part, singing bits of songs from the entire show.  the students were amazed at his talent.  The fourth and fifth grades had prepared questions in advance to ask him and were able to hear his answers at the end.

On the day of the opera, the students were enchanted by the performance's clever staging, and the talented voices of the singers.  Students especially loved the enormous dragon made from papier mache that started off the show.  The Boston Lyric Opera condensed "The Magic Flute" from its normal four hours into a one-hour production, perfect for the young audience.  Mount Hope left the performance, eager to return next year.
